Overall

An underwhelming spring and summer, finally gaining momentum midway through autumn. The first three fics I posted this year were actually written in 2017, with the Roadrat in particular sitting around as a WIP for a very long time. Everything I wrote until October was for an exchange, and in fact the Han/Lando in August is a) only half finished and b) a defaulted exchange fic. The Kylux in October was a real albatross and was also for an organised event. I really only woke up when I saw CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE VENOM - then November and December were really quite good, from a writing perspective.

Most popular story

Vessel, by an insane stretch. It's probably safe to say nothing I'll ever write in the future will get that kind of attention. As of today it has (goes to check) 9141 kudos.

Story most underappreciated by the universe

The Belly of the Beast, I guess. But it's a non-existent fandom and a very spicy, trashy kind of porn. So I didn't have high hopes.

Most controversial story

I avoided all wank with extreme dexterity this year, although I was anticipating problems with Hooked. Roadrat fandom is obnoxiously fluffy for a pair of actual, canonical murder arsonists. Predicting backlash actually held up the completion of this fic by several months, which is unusual for me.

Hardest story to write?

Beyond Reasonable Doubt. Hated writing it, felt bad for my Big Bang artist having to make art for it, would happily delete it. It needed more research of the kind that I find tedious, so I skimped on that and it's a weak story. The plot could support a good, angsty, romantic novella, but I tapped out at 8k and hit the post button.

Favorite title?

Steal My Heart (Grand Theft Lotho). It's still unfinished, but I started with the title which I thought was perfect for a Han/Lando heist fic. I want to get it completed, if only to do that title justice.

Favorite line/scene?

This is it—this is it!—the brilliant, electric moment when he’s the sole focus of Roadhog’s violent attentions. Any of his attentions are good, and almost always Roadhog’s not hurting him. But the man who was once called Mako Rutledge, in the Before time, is a specialist in violence. Really takes his time over it. A connoisseur. When Roadhog’s hurting you, he’s paying real good attention to you.

I desperately wanted to write something from Junkrat's POV - something that did justice to his weird, twitchy character design and voice acting, but also gave a sense of what an actual man who had endured what he had might be like. He has a bit of a comic relief vibe in the game, too, a kind of levity. The balance was between that levity and the fact that he's, you know a double-amputee explosives expert wandering the post-apocalyptic Australian outback Mad Max-style. Ultimately I was pleased with the whole fic; this little segment in particular rang true to me and, it seemed, the people who read it.

Favorite character to write about this year

I want to say Frank Castle, but honestly I was just thirst-writing a lot of words about Jon Bernthal, okay, just don't look at me.

Looking back, did you write more stories than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I wouldn't say I was optimistic about my likely output this year, but I disappointed even myself until October.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted? What fic didn't you expect to write?

I can't say I really expected to write The Belly of the Beast, a 3500-word porn fest set inside a World War Two tank. I would characterise that as 'unexpected', yes. I wrote it in a single day, and posted it without proof-reading. So that was definitely a thing that happened that was not on my 2018 list of goals and resolutions.

Story that could have been better?

Beyond Reasonable Doubt, Grand Theft Lotho (unfinished), Consume Me (unfinished). I mean, all of it, really. But especially those three.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Not really. This was not a year for risks. Talk to me again at the end of 2019, after I completed [TOP SECRET REDACTED PUNISHER FIC]. One notable trend, though, was that I started actively tagging for PTSD in my fics. I think you could go back to the very beginning and tag solidly 75% of my fics with that tag, but now I actually know that I'm doing the thing and may therefore be doing the thing more mindfully and better.

Fics you wanted to write but didn't

My whole WIP list. The second part of Grand Theft Lotho. Anything good?

What's next for 2019

I signed up for [community profile] getyourwordsout at the 150,000 word level, so I'm pledging to write an average of 411 words a day. I think I'm ready, having dealt with some other areas of my life in 2016 and 2017, to amp up my wordcount again. I want to finish some unfinished things, for sure. I also need to get into the habit of writing ALL of a longer piece before posting it.

Longer fic in general is a goal - I know I can bang out passable 3000-5000 word PWPs but I want to develop my skills in plot. Plus, I'd like to find someone who is a more skilled writer and storycrafter than me to help beta and work on my actual literary skills, as opposed to just coasting on reasonably good prose and porn.

Hello writer/s!

I'm Lingua, and you can find me as linguamortua on the AO3 and lingua-mortua on Tumblr.

General information

Things I like in fic: I am an avid consumer of darkfic; I read and write dubcon, manipulation, age differences, moral grey areas and dilemmas, power plays, secrets, lies, and messed up power dynamics. Plot twists, trope inversion and clever metatextual references are all great fun for me. Generally I prefer my fic to be canon-compliant or canon-adjacent. I love femslash and woman-centric fic! Sex and PWPs are more than fine by me. Smut things I like: size differences, choking, dirty talk, cunnilingus, D/s elements (although rarely formal D/s play).

Things I don't want to receive: pregnancy or mpreg, forced feminization, public humiliation, fluff, kidfic. I don't like anything which focuses on having or coping with a mental illness, especially depression, but realistic references to canon mental illness is fine. I'm not wild about M/f. More specifically: please, no pet names, aggressive verbal slurs or humiliation, medical kink or settings, lifestyle BDSM, polyamory, A/B/O, scat, watersports or incest.

Call Me by Your Name
Elio/Oliver

I was so taken with how sensuous and patient this film was, and how well it captured the unspeakable nightmare of being seventeen. What a great adaptation of a great book. One thing I especially enjoyed was Elio's teenage tendency to treat Oliver appallingly because he couldn't work out how to deal with him. The physicality of both Oliver and Elio is lovely, too - there are times when they shove each other and wrestle that you're reminded that Oliver is really not past that kind of rough-housing play either.

What would I like in a fic? Both the book and film were very much from Elio's perspective, so something that tells us what Oliver was thinking would be brilliant. Alternatively, take Elio's basically non-stop internal monologue and run with it. For this pairing, I am not really fussy about whether or not penetration happens. If it does, a first-time fic could be neat. More generally speaking, I love me an overwhelmed twink who doesn't know what to do with himself. I would be crazy about a fic where they have to be very quiet while having sex. I would also love anything in which Elio realises that what he thinks are horrible perversions are actually quite commonplace (Oliver: that's hilarious, have you ever thought about this). Also: dirty talk would be just great for this pairing.

Return to Night - Mary Renault
Hilary Mansell/Julian Fleming

Julian is kind of obnoxious but so wretchedly adorable. I crave fic that makes him suffer in some way, or in which Hilary deliberately keeps him off-balance. Although the fic is set in an historical period where Hilary, as a doctor, is an anomaly among women, I think her age and experience gives her power over him and I would welcome any fic that explored that. I do dearly love F/m and he's kind of the perfect candidate.

Silence (2016)
Cristóvão Ferreira, Francisco Garrpe, Kichijiro, Sebastião Rodrigues

Past letters will tell you that I love this movie for the religious and physical suffering and the general sense of futility. Tropes or themes I would love to see in this:

  • A fic set when Rodrigues and Garrupe first met, or when they were back in Portugal.
  • A story that shows their relationship with Ferreira.
  • Ferreira has always liked one of them more than the other.
  • An alternate story where they escape.
  • Losing or regaining faith.
  • Anything that expands on Kichijiro and his strategy for handling the Jesuits

Luke Cage
Cornell Cottonmouth Stokes, Darius "Comanche" Jones,  Mariah Dillard, Shades Alvarez

I do like a good sinister, lurking henchman. Shades particularly intrigues me because he's in a curious position relative to Stokes, with an element of power via a shadowy master. There have been some great fics bouncing off the end of season 2 with Shades and Mariah, and what all my favourite fics have in common is showing how Shades might be willing to temporarily subordinate himself to someone for an advantageous position later in the game.

  • What does Stokes want from Shades, and what price will Shades exact for it?
  • Or, conversely, what might Shades have to do in order to get close to Stokes?
  • Can Shades serve two masters - or mistresses - without getting found out?
  • I'd also be interested in a fic where Shades plays Mariah and Stokes off against one another.
  • I was amazed by the Shades/Comanche storyline. If you're so inspired, tell me about their relationship. How it begins, how they maintain it in prison, how it ends. I'd also love an alternate path, where Shades has to juggle Mariah and Comanche at the same time, without Mariah finding out.

Venom (Movie 2018)
Eddie Brock/Venom Symbiote

Seeing the film threw me back about ten years when I got briefly into one of the unfortunately less sexy comic book runs. Wow, this is a great pairing. I'm a darkfic kind of gal, so if that's your bag then go nuts with this pairing. If not, PWP is always great, particularly if weird alien tentacle freakiness or a sex pollen type vibe is something you'd write. Otherwise - surprise me! Y'know, just fuck me up.
